Crete is the largest of all the Greek islands by far.
Travellers of different interests from all over the world, are visiting the island for its archeological sites - monuments - museums, the picturesque beaches, the breathtaking gorges, the Cretan gastronomy & the local culture.
The large size of the island with the countless activities that travellers may experience, creates an average stay of 9 nights per person that is higher compared to other Greek islands. This creates more chances for the visitors, to be in a situation that they might need to get in contact with the local public services.
Let's start with the basics.
1. General Hospital of Chania
Chania's General Hospital is located 4 kms. South of Chania's city centre.
It has an easy access by car, taxi or the urban public bus (line 24).
With almost all the health services required by a modern hospital available, is the second biggest on the island, after the University Hospital of Heraklio .
The hospital's website is easy to use but only if you can read Greek,
as unfortunately, there is no English version (at least we didn't find one).

2. Chania Tourism Bureau
Chania's tourism bureau website has lots of useful information including monuments, beaches, gorges, museums, archaeological sites & many more. Moreover, it offers valuable information about local history, traditions, culture & the Cretan diet-food.
The section about Chania's history is just outstanding. Their NEWS section, needs to be updated.
3. Citizens Services Centers (Κ.Ε.Π. or KEP in English )
In the very likely case that you'll have to deal with the Greek governmental bureaucratic sector during your stay, you will have to visit one of the Citizens Services Centers (called KEP in short).
There are two main KEP offices located in Chania's City centre & both of them operate:

*Always have your passport or ID with you when you visit them.
4. Post Office Services (Hellenic Post - ELTA)
Downtown Chania, there are two post offices with slightly different roles.
What they do have in common is that both go slow!
The main post office of Chania & the busiest. Often, there is a queue waiting on the sidewalk due to the fact that everything goes so SLOW in there.

Less crowded, specialized in boxes, parcels & courier services.
Make sure that everything you need to send is wrapped & taped ahead of time, as they do not provide wrapping paper, boxes or tape, even if you have the will to pay extra.

5.Tourists Information Office
A small office of the Greek National Tourism Organization downtown Chania, with mission to provide information to the visitors. The level of services & information is very good.
They also offer free city maps.

6.International Airport of Chania (CHQ)
Chania's International Airport - Ioannis Daskalogiannis, took its name from the famous rebel who fought against the Ottoman rule occupation at the 18th century.
It is located 14kms away from Chania's city centre. at the Akrotiri area.
The IATA code is CHQ.
Just a few years ago renovated with the money of the Greek citizens & then it was given to the German company Fraport for handling (together with other Greek airports)! Very busy during the Summer months with charter, low cost, international or domestic flights. No free parking space inside but you might be lucky and find some space just outside.
Airport is connected with Chania's centre with the green sub urban KTEL busses or by taxi.
7.Souda Port
Souda Port is located 6,5 kms East of Chania's city centre & it's the biggest natural port in the East Mediterranean Sea.
Just a few years ago, new big docks were created & slowly-slowly the port became very attractive to the Cruise Ships companies.
Unfortunately, during the tourist season we might have two or even three cruise ships at the port of Souda at the same time, creating with their thousands of passengers a chaotic situations in the city centre & a mass tourism reputation for the destination.
Daily, there is ferry boat connection with the Port of Piraeus (the port of Athens) & during the Summer season, two (one in the day time & one the night time).
The Port is connected with Chania's centre with the urban blue busses.
